Science and Research

Science and research are based on knowledge, experience, and skills, since being the activities of special importance for the overall development of the Republic of Serbia. They drive economic and overall social development and are part of the international scientific, educational, cultural, and artistic space, along with higher education.

Science and research are systematic creative work undertaken in order to generate new knowledge, and with the aim of raising the general civilization level of society and using that knowledge in all social development areas.

For the purpose of long-term strategic goals, priorities, and directions of scientific and technological development planning and implementation, the Government of Serbia has adopted The Power of Knowledge - the Scientific and Technological Development Strategy of the Republic of Serbia for the period from 2021 to 2025. The strategy reposes on the tenet that Serbia shall be strong, prosperous, and respected in proportion to the knowledge possessed by the thinking individuals community. In confronting numerous global challenges, this strategy identifies knowledge as a reliable foundation for future economic progress, the education development, and the preservation of health, safety, and national identity in the Republic of Serbia.

The strategy aligns with the strategy for general economic and social development of the Republic of Serbia, as well as other national, regional, and European strategies, including the Smart Specialization Strategy in the Republic of Serbia for the period from 2020 to 2027.

The science and research system in the Republic of Serbia is regulated by the Law on Scientific Research and Activity. This includes planning and implementing the general interest in science and research, ensuring scientific research work quality and development, the legal status of institutes, establishing and managing institutes, acquiring researcher titles, institutional funding and other general social interest programs funding, record-keeping, as well as other issues relevant to the system of science and research.

Bodies and commissions responsible for ensuring the scientific research work quality and the development of scientific research activities in the Republic of Serbia include:

• National Council for Scientific and Technological Development;
• Committee for Accreditation of Scientific Research Organizations;
• Commission for Acquisition of Scientific Titles;
• Parent scientific committees;
